Title: Physiological and pathophysiological roles of lysophospholipid signaling

Abstract:
Lysophospholipids have been shown in recent years to be signaling molecules that bring about diverse effects through cognate G-protein coupled receptors. There are now at least 9 receptors that mediate effects of LPA or S1P&s_comma; and a range of approaches has been directed at determining the physiological and pathophysiological roles of this lipid signaling system&s_comma; including pharmacological and genetic strategies. I will discuss examples of lysophospholipid signaling that have clear medical relevance&s_comma; from neural and non-neural models. Neural models include neuropathic pain&s_comma; multiple sclerosis and effects on neural stem/progenitor cells. Non-neural phenomena include a wide range of organ systems&s_comma; and a recent study demonstrating linkage between implantation and fertility via the third LPA receptor&s_comma; LPA3&s_comma;will be discussed.
